Alcohol

What is alcohol?

Alcohol is a drug (a chemical that has an effect on the body and is not a food)
It is made by fermenting (a chemical change brought on by the action of  microscopic yeast moulds and bacteria) yeast or bacteria and sugar with water and other ingredients. Wine and cider are made by fermenting fruit. Beer and spirits are made by fermenting cereals such as barley and rye. A drink’s alcohol content (how strong it is) is affected by how long it’s left to ferment.

Why do people drink alcohol?

People drink alcohol for a whole range of reasons.

A small amount of alcohol can make people feel relaxed and sociable. Alcohol is often drunk at celebrations such as weddings.

Drinking too much, however, can have some immediate side effects including feeling sick, dehydration, increased risk of accidents and lowered inhibitions. In the long-term alcohol can cause, among other things, liver damage, heart disease and some cancers. If regularly drunk to excess alcohol can become addictive, leading to dependency or alcoholism.
