PCP Rehabilitation Program

Back

A good rehabilitation program for treating PCP addiction should entail the following:

• Detoxification – This is stopping further intake of the drug as well as treating the resultant withdrawal symptoms. The medications that are most preferred for treating PCP are benzodiazepines, as Phenothiazines and haloperidol have more serious side effects as well as elevating body temperatures and worsening seizures.

• Physical therapy - Also referred to as supportive care, is helping addicts exercise in an effort to make them regain the normal rhythm of bodily functions such as breathing, blood circulation and maintaining body temperature.

• Supportive environment – The rehabilitation program should be a non-judgmental and supportive environment that does not condemn the addicts – everything from infrastructure, staff and the geographical location of the center should speak of utmost support.

• Personnel – The staff should be optimistic that the addicts can be helped as this will seep into the addicts, increasing their desire to get better.

• Individualized care – The rehabilitation programs should be individually tailored, taking into consideration that each addict has unique needs. Again the programs should be evaluated time and again and adjusted accordingly as the needs of the patients change with the progress of treatment.

• Counseling and therapy – Individual counseling should be made available as well as group therapy, though none should be forced.

• Monitoring – There should be constant monitoring of the patients by qualified personnel to keep track of the patient’s progress or lack of it.

PCP treatment is a great way of dealing with all the other impacts of addiction to this drug as well as avoiding relapse and death by an overdose.
