Smoking Addiction And Your Immune System

Back

The question has often been asked about smoking addiction and your immune system.  Is it harmful to your system? The answer unfortunately is yes it is definitely harmful. Your immune system, heart and lungs will pay the price of your addiction to cigarettes and pipes alike. The fact of the matter is that an addiction like this can cause you to get more infections than you would if you didn’t smoke. You have carbon monoxide flowing through your lungs and gumming them up with damage and irritation. This damages the response of the immune cells and the immune system.

Continuous smoking also damages the immune cells and decreases their ability to help you heal.  Your lung tissue will also suffer. This can cause respiratory diseases and lung infection that can be hard to heal if you continue to smoke. COPD is also a rampant problem for those who do smoke or have smoking addiction. With all the carcinogens that smoke has in it, is it little wonder that your immune system gets on its knees and begs for you to stop? Every system in your body is affected when you smoke. It can kill cells and lead to disease that is worse than smoking and most times is fatal such as lung cancer, mouth cancer, esophageal cancer and other cancers.

Your smoking addiction hits every single part of your body. There is less oxygen for your cells to intake making them susceptible to disease moving in. It lowers your immune response and can lead to getting infections frequently. Folks, getting COPD and black lung are no fun. Neither is trying to get the treatment to reverse or at least hold off these diseases so that life is bearable. With a weakened immune system, your heart and immune system don’t work quite as well as they did before.

So, smoking addiction has the potential to not only lower the immune response but to cripple it completely. If you are a smoker, you may be wondering why you are getting sicker or getting more infections. It is because of what the smoke contains and each of the carcinogens is affecting a different part of your body and immune system. The only way to stop this and reverse the trend is to stop smoking completely or never start in the first place. Smoking isn’t worth destroying your immune system.

A weakened immune system can leave you open for more than just cancer however. When you have a smoking addiction, all you can think about is satisfying the cravings. However, the damage that you are doing to your body needs to make you think about what you are doing. One thing that you need to think about is that if you get an infection due to a weakened immune system, that infection will stay put longer and take more time to heal. There are bugs that will get into a weakened system and really play havoc with your system. Don't you think it is about time to quit smoking and heal your body and immune system?
