The “Miami Cannibal”

“Bath Salts”

Bath Salts is the name for a cocktail of chemicals mainly sold in the USA, containing mephedrone, causing various effects on the body like dizziness, delusions, paranoia, suicidal thoughts, seizures, nausea, vomiting and even death. They may also cause, or at least aggravate, severe cases of aggression and violence, as seen in the case of Rudy Eugene, 31, from Miami.

The Attack

On the 26th of May 2012, at about 2 in the afternoon, Eugene attacked a homeless man on the MacArthur Causeway in Miami, while strongly suspected to be under the influence of bath salts. Over the course of almost 20 minutes, a naked Eugene remonstrated with Ronald Poppo, 65, about a stolen Bible, before beating him unconscious, removing his trousers, and then literally chewing off most of his face above the beard. Eugene was shot and killed by police officers who responded to the situation. It took five bullets to take him down. It is reported he growled at police like an animal before continuing to chew on Poppo’s face.

Consequences for the victim

Poppo left the scene in an ambulance and was admitted to hospital with three quarters of his face above the beard missing. He was blinded, lost one eye for good, and was involved in surgery that took months to complete.
