Caffeine Addiction

Caffeine, found in coffee, tea and most soft drinks, is a central nervous system stimulant which occurs naturally in many plants. It acts differently to other addictive drugs like cocaine or amphetamines by blocking adenosine receptors. Adenosine is a chemical produced as a byproduct of cell activity, and is key in signalling to the rest of the body that it is tired, and it is time to sleep. By blocking adenosine, caffeine allows the body’s natural stimulants, norepinephrine and dopamine, to function at a higher level, increasing alertness, concentration, and physical ability.

Caffeine addiction is much discussed, and often joked about. But is it real? You often hear of people complaining they can’t function without their morning cup of tea or coffee. Research at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine (USA) suggests that people consuming over 100mg a day of caffeine (just one cup of coffee) may be acquiring a physical dependence which could trigger withdrawal symptoms if taken away – for example, headaches, muscle stiffness, lethargy, nausea, depression and irritability. Sound familiar? Withdrawals occurred 12-24 hours after caffeine was last consumed, and could last for over a week.

While doubtless less destructive than many of the other addictions presented on haveigotaproblem.com, caffeine addiction is a real thing, and can become dangerous. This addiction can lead to requiring greater and greater intakes of caffeine to achieve the same stimulating effect, and excess caffeine is not particularly good for the heart, leading to palpitations and increased blood pressure, thereby increasing the risk of strokes and heart attacks and releasing adrenalin and other stress hormones into the bloodstream.

So while caffeine is unlikely to force you to a life of crime and ruin your relationships with your family, think carefully before having that extra cup of coffee. Is it worth the risk?
