Symptoms of Ecstasy addiction

Back

Ecstasy addiction continues to be a growing problem.   Although certain drug addiction rates have dropped in recent years, ecstasy abuse and addiction is on the rise, especially among young people.   Parents, friends or loved ones need to be aware of the signs and symptoms of ecstasy addiction so they can help the individual if they are unable or unwilling to admit that they have a problem.

What Are the Symptoms of Ecstasy Addiction?

The following represent the most classic signs and symptoms of ecstasy abuse or addiction.   These warning signs may vary between individuals, but all strongly indicate that the person is abusing the drug.   These signs are especially prevalent among teen abusers of ecstasy.

  • Attending raves or other late night parties.   The rave is the primary distribution point for ecstasy.  The rave is a large party where individuals dance the night away while under the influence of ecstasy.

  • Irritable behavior. Ecstasy causes a depletion of serotonin in the brain following use.  This leads to depression and irritability the day after use.

  • Use of lollipops or pacifiers.   It may sound odd to the uninformed, but when individuals use ecstasy habitually, they may find themselves clenching their teeth when coming down off the drug.   To ease discomfort, many use hard candy or a baby pacifier.

  • Sleeplessness.   Most individuals find it very difficult to sleep when under the influence of ecstasy.

  • The odor of Tiger Balm.   Once of the lesser known symptoms of ecstasy addiction is muscle cramping.   To ease this pain, many will use Tiger Balm – which carries with it a strong, distinct odor.
  • Carrying children’s vitamin containers.   A common method of concealing ecstasy tablets.

  • Tootsie Rolls.   Many users will take the ecstasy pill and push it into a small, bite-size Tootsie Roll – concealing the drug and making it easier to ingest (a highly dangerous practice if there are small children in the house).

The Dangers

What makes ecstasy addiction so dangerous?  Using ecstasy damages the chemical functions of the brain.  As such, there is a surprisingly high number of potential health risks associated with this “party drug,” including:

  • Extreme changes to body temperature, leading to hypothermia, heat stroke and dehydration
  • High blood pressure
  • Fainting
  • Muscle cramps
  • Blurred visions
  • Disoriented behavior
  • Panic attacks or anxiety attacks

In the most serious cases of ecstasy addiction and abuse, individuals have died as a result of seizure or stroke from the health effects of ecstasy addiction.
