Combining Heroin With Other Drugs

Back

Heroin is one drug among many that comes from the opium plant. While it is often used on its own via injecting, smoking or snorting it, many people also combine heroin with other drugs. On its own, heroin can cause many problems to your health, and when you add another drug, the potential danger can be even worse. There are some specific drugs that can be particularly dangerous when you mix them with heroin.

If you need help due to an addiction to heroin or you combine heroin with other drugs, there are various treatment problems available that can help you. Don’t wait to get help because the effects of heroin can be very serious to your health, even causing overdose.

Heroin Mixed With Cocaine

A January 2003 study in the journal Addiction tried to understand why people tend to take heroin and cocaine together. The authors noted that using these drugs together does not seem to give users a better high. They noted that more research is needed on this subject to understand the reason behind the mixture and to be able to help people who decide to take the combination in their recovery efforts.

Whatever the motivation behind mixing the drugs, taking cocaine and heroin together can have serious consequences for your health. An April 2002 study in the journal Chest discussed the effects of taking heroin and cocaine together when users change the drugs’ consistency and snort the combination. The study found that using cocaine and heroin together in this way led to bronchial hyperreactivity, which is a condition characterized by muscle contractions in the airways. The combination also caused wheezing.

The combination of heroin and cocaine can also throw off your heart rate which, at a serious level, can result in death.

Alcohol and Heroin Together

Heroin and alcohol are both central nervous system depressants, so when they’re taken together, the combined effects can be too much for the body to handle – the combination can even lead to coma and death. Together, heroin and alcohol can affect your breathing and your heart rate, slowing both to hazardous levels.

Combining Heroin With Additional Drugs

A number of additional drugs can have negative effects when used alongside heroin. If you take heroin along with methamphetamine or Ecstasy, you run the risk of an overdose. These drugs give the opposite effect of heroin, so they can cover up its effects, oftentimes leading the user to take more heroin in an effort to feel the effects that are behind hidden by the other drugs. Taking GHB with heroin can overwhelm the nervous system to the point that it can cause death. Also, the opioid painkiller Fentanyl can amplify heroin’s effects in your system. It can cause a number of side effects like feeling nauseous, confused or tired. It can also cause you to have breathing problems or to go into a coma.

Dangers of Heroin

On its own, heroin is a dangerous drug. It can cause many side effects, which include:

  • Infectious diseases from injecting it
  • Breathing problems
  • Dependence and addiction
  • Overdose that can cause death
  • Extreme withdrawal symptoms if you stop, like diarrhea, throwing up and pain

Even if you don’t mix heroin with any other drugs, when you buy it on the street, it is often already mixed with harmful substances. These additives can cause serious organ damage.

In addition to this list, other drugs might interact with heroin in a treacherous way. Be careful about mixing any kind of drugs together.
